A Modest Compendium of PBEM, Games, and Other Game Stuff
In general this site covers the Up Front (UF) PBEM "ladder" that I run. I used to run a History of the World (HotW) ladder as well, but time took it's toll on that one. All of the information on the HotW ladder is still available here. If anyone wants to take this over, let me know and we can work it out. In any case there is still some good HotW
info here, particularly the article on how to play the bidding version.
So check it out. I will also cover other games, companies, game clubs,
game related links, some lighthouse stuff and anything else I feel like
(this is an ego page after all). Now and then I add stuff or update
things. The ladder is what tends to be the most up to date. Anyway,
here's what I have currently:
-
(07/02/06) Information on Up Front and the Up Front PBEM ladder.
(Last update 11/09/01) This is where you can find the History of the World board game information. This is currently not active but the historical information is available. You can also read the authorized "reprint" of the HotW article from The General describing the alternative bidding rules and HotW errata, questions and answers.
- Here's where you can find out some basic information about what A.R.E.A. is and what those numbers mean. You can also find a link here for more AREA information.
- Other Game Related Links.
- Things I expect to add in the Future.
On a Different Note:
The greatest Science Fiction TV show you probably never saw is on DVD as is the follow on major motion picture. Joss Whedon's Firefly TV show is on the big screen (well not very many any more but still a few) as Serenity. If you've never seen Firefly, you NEED to do yourself a favor and go out and buy the DVD set Firefly the Complete Series.
You really do. Or at least rent or borrow it to see why you need to buy
it. Everyone who sees this later asks "Why isn't this on TV?". Perhaps
some day it will be again. The entire cast is back for the Movie. Look
it up - you won't be disappointed. You can buy the dvd pretty much
anywhere (Bestbuy, Circuit City, etc.). The official site (http://www.serenitymovie.com) for the movie and a good fan site can be found at whttp://fireflydvd.com/wp/
. The movie actually got a number of very good reviews. Why
Universal didn't do more with that information is an interesting question.
For instance, did anyone see an add where they noted that Serenity
got "two thumbs up"? But it did. There are many rumors of
interesting and odd ways to move Firefly forward. Will anything
happen?

- (03/28/01) For anyone who's interested, I have a few lighthouse pics and information in my Michigan Lighthouse Page.
Someday I'll even update it with some more pictures.
Some Other Game Links
- Both of the above games were by The Avalon Hill Game Company.
They made great board and card games as well as computer games. These
ran the gamut from family to sports to war games. You probably know
that Hasbro has purchased The Avalon Hill Game Company. It has now been
moved to Wizards of the Coast.
Some of the old games are still available and some new games and some
of the old favorites (such as Diplomacy and Acquire) are being
republished. In addition, old Hasbro games like Axis and Allies are now
published under the Avalon Hill name.
- For a cool site to discuss games, try John Kranz' ConsimWorld Discussion Area. You'll have to sign up, but it's worth it (no cost or spams result).
Note (07/11/04): That said, there is word that this may become a subscription site. You'll need to go there to find out for sure.
- The old Detroit area game club, The Yankee Air Pirates, has moved, both in physical location (it's now in the Quad City area) and web page URL (the new address is members.home.net/yankeeap/home.htm.
But it's still a great game site. (There is still a Detroit area club
known as Yankee Air Pirates East, but I don't have any other site
information.)

What the Future Should Bring
- More and better formatted information on the UF ladder ratings, players, and active games.
- Possibly information on other games.
- Experiences with Squamous Cell Cancer and a link to a much more complete site.
- Now that I have my scanner, I've started a simple Lighthouse
page. This will mostly show pictures of the various Michigan
lighthouses that I've visited. I'll be slowly adding pictures, so look
for the update date. As always, let me know if you have any suggestions.
